Hellensmusic Festival 2018: Bandoneon Concert
30 November -1
Hellens, Much Marcle, Nr Ledbury, Herefordshire HR8 2LY
8pm at St Bartholemew’s Church, Much Marcle, the inaugural concert of Hellensmusic 2018.
The bandoneon is widely recognised as one of tango music’s key instruments but its original, lesser-known purpose was in fact quite distinct: it was initially meant as a portable organ that would take religious music to the streets of 18th century Germany, but it soon found its way into the dark alleys of Buenos Aires – a story that Astor Piazzolla cheekily loved to recount. Devised by virtuoso bandoneon player Omar Massa, Hellensmusic 2018’s inaugural concert suggests a musical journey from the instrument’s origins to its stellar role in tango, particularly in Piazzolla’s music.
