Much Marcle Open Gardens Day

19 May 2024

A new event takes place in May, with the launch of the very first Much Marcle Open Gardens Day. This community-led event will be raising funds to support the opening of a new community shop in the village.

Of the ten gardens open for visiting on Sunday 19th May, six are in the village and four are within a couple of miles. At Homme House and Phillips House, you can see the start of ‘No-Mow May’ and enjoy fabulous views from the gardens. At Awnells Farm you can enjoy the superb planting of spring flowers surrounded by the rare breed stock, for which Awnells Farm has become famous. Reddingend has beautifully planted borders and walls covered with climbers, while at Huntleys Farm there is even a model railway running through part of the garden.

The tour of the gardens will start at Much Marcle Memorial Hall, where tickets can be purchased (Adults £5, children free). The large hall will be open for tea, coffee and cakes from 10am until 4pm, while soup, buns and quiche will be served from Midday until 4pm. Members of the gardening club and garden owners have already started preparing plants for the plant stall in the Bob Dallow Room.

Dogs on leads are welcome with their responsible owners. You can find out more about the open gardens event on Facebook, you’ll find a link on the website of the Much Marcle Community Shop. Some of the garden owners will be posting details of what you can expect to see when their gardens open on Sunday 19th May.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY SHOP

Plans to open a community shop in Much Marcle began when the village shop closed due to retirement. In the summer of 2022, a share offer was launched, which to date has raised more than £90,000 from 250 shareholders. The offer remains open to anyone who would like to help develop this valuable community hub, to find out more, visit muchmarcleshop.org
